The salt deposits in the Ribera Alta been exploited since time immemorial: Iberians, Romans and Arabs extracted it.  When the King Alfonso I the Battler included these lands to the kingdom of Aragon mines became real property, King Jaime I in 1269 exempted Daroca's neighbors from the obligation to buy salt of Remolinos It is estimated that the mines had an approximate value of 8.000 sueldos.  Little is known about the size of the mine and work within them to visit in 1585 of  Henrique Cock that wrote "having entered we found a bad smell, almost making us sick; the reason is that all who work there defecate wherever they want".
In 1616 Diego Murillo stated that "Are these explotations  some big mountains of salt that are undermining, leaving at intervals some pillars very thick so that they sustain the mountanin;  and between the pillars are wide squares and streets where walk those who are breaking  with iron picks".
The salt business was an important source of revenue for the Crown  who held the monopoly until 1870.  The mine was placed on sale for 856.400 pesetas. but in the absence of buyers in 1884 was priced at 30.000 pesetas and finally bought by  Benito Giranta who transferred to different owners until it reaches the hands of the British mining company "The Pure Salt Limited",
In 1926 the mine was owned by the company Estremera y Calvé. Iin the 50's the production was 15.000 tonnes and the company Ibérica de Sales made major improvements such as electric lighting and an ore transport system to the outside with one-ton trucks driven by winch which increased production to 170,000 metric tonnes annually.  The mine closed on May 5, 1989.
